Introduction
The Disappearance of Joshua Slocum
Captain Joshua Slocum was no ordinary sailor. In 1895, he became the first person to sail alone
around the world, completing a voyage that made him an international celebrity. His small vessel,
the Spray became almost as famous as the man who sailed her.
Fourteen years later, Slocum disappeared.
On the morning of November 14, 1909, the sixty-five-year-old captain sailed away from Martha’s
Vineyard aboard the Spray. He was apparently bound south, although his exact destination
remains uncertain. He may have intended to cruise toward the West Indies or continue toward the
rivers of South America.
He never arrived.
No confirmed wreckage of the Spray was ever found. No body was recovered. No reliable final
message explained what happened. Eventually, the disappearance was accepted as another
maritime mystery—perhaps an accident, perhaps a storm, perhaps something no one could ever
know.
But what if the story is not that simple?
This website explores the unanswered questions surrounding Slocum’s final voyage. It examines
the historical record, the geography of his intended route, the people and circumstances
surrounding his disappearance, and the clues that have fueled speculation for more than a century.
At the center of the mystery is one particularly intriguing question: Why would a warning connected to Slocum mention the Orinoco?
Was it merely a coincidence? Was Slocum headed toward a danger he did not know about? Or
could the strange clue point toward a completely different explanation for his disappearance?
The purpose here is not to turn speculation into fact. It is to separate what is known from what is possible---and to invite the reader to consider the evidence for themselves.
More than a century later, the Spray has never been found. Joshua Slocum's final destination remains unknown.
